  • Dr Ritu Jacob, a Bangalore-based orthodontist, advises her patients to brush at least three times a day, especially after meals. In fact, Colgate has a special interdental toothbrush made specifically for those with braces.
  • She also emphasises on the importance of flossing to keep food particles from getting stuck between the teeth.
  • Another tip to keep your mouth free of cavities is to use a fluoride mouthwash or a toothpaste like Colgate Total that contains fluoride.
  • Some braces-wearers might develop ulcers or traumatic irritation in the initial stage of the treatment. In this case, Dr Neha Sarda, a dentist from Bangalore, recommends applying an anaesthetic gel or wax on the braces for a while. If the irritation is too much, you could also use moist cotton for temporary relief.
  • Remember, your treatment is not over as soon as your braces come off. If you’ve been given retainers, remember to wear them regularly and take a good care of them.
  • Whatever happens, remember to keep your appointment with your dentist!

Dental health tips for those who wear braces – Don’ts

  • Dr Jacob is very particular about the type of food her patients should stay away from during their orthodontic treatment. Foods to avoid include sticky foods like chewing gum, sticky candy, corn on the cob, mozzarella cheese and popcorn.
  • Also avoid hard foods like ice cubes, as they might dislodge the braces.
  • All you lovers of colas will have to go without them through your treatment, as carbonated drinks are a strict no-no for braces-wearers.
  • As far as possible, don’t bite into food with your front teeth as this might lead to de-bonding of the braces.
  • Don’t play around with your braces. You don’t want an accident to happen.

Wearing braces may seem cumbersome, but with technology improvement in the field of orthodontics, you can have a safe and effective treatment. You could choose ceramic braces that are not as jarring to look at as all metal ones. And improved bonding material also helps in enhancing the overall experience for patients.

How do sugars attack your teeth?

Invisible germs called bacteria live in your mouth all the time. Some of these bacteria form a layer of sticky material called plaque on the surface of the teeth. When you put sugar in your mouth, the bacteria in the plaque gobble up the sweet stuff and turn it into acids. These acids are powerful enough to dissolve the hard enamel that covers and protects your teeth. That’s how cavities get started. If you don’t eat much sugar, the bacteria can’t produce as much of the acid that eats away enamel.

How can I “snack smart” to protect myself from tooth decay?

Before you start munching on a snack, ask yourself what’s in the food you’ve chosen. Another choice may be better for your teeth. Gooey or chewy sweets stick to the surface of your teeth for a longer time, giving your teeth a longer sugar bath than foods that you would quickly chew and swallow.

You should also think about when and how often you eat snacks. Damaging acids form in your mouth every time you eat a sugary snack. So, the more times you eat sugary snacks during the day, the more often you feed bacteria the fuel they need to cause tooth decay.If you eat sweets, it’s best to eat them as dessert after a main meal instead of several times a day between meals. Brushing teeth after you have a sweet can save you from tooth decay.

How can you snack smart? Be choosy!

There are lots of tasty, filling snacks that are less harmful to your teeth and the rest of your body than foods loaded with sugars and low in nutritional value. Low-fat choices like raw vegetables, fresh fruits, or whole-grain crackers or breads are smart choices. Eating the right foods can help protect you from tooth decay and other diseases. Next time you reach for a snack, pick a food from the list inside or make up your own menu of non-sugary, low-fat snack foods from the basic food groups.

Choose a snack that is nutritious as well as tasty. Read the nutrition facts before you buy something from the grocery store. Be creative with the way you cook or eat healthy snacks. Avoid sweets between meals and pick a variety of low or non-fat foods to munch on. Some of the healthy options are listed below:-

What’s in brewer’s yeast?

What does brewer’s yeast do for your body?

My experience with brewer’s yeast tablets:

For years I have been taking brewer’s yeast tablets every day. From my puberty, I suffer from impure skin and acne. Due to hormone fluctuations, I have periods in which I suffer from pimples. If I take my brewer’s yeast tablets every day, my skin will be calmer and the amount of pimples that I have will decrease. My hormone fluctuations are less visible in my skin, it all looks a bit more stable. In recent years I have had periods in which I swallowed my tablets less well. Because I forgot or wanted to test if it still works really well. After a few weeks I noticed a difference, my skin became more restless and the number of pimples clearly increased. As described above, brewer’s yeast must have more positive influences on your body in addition to your skin. I personally do not notice this immediately.

Brewer’s yeast tablets can be purchased at the drugstore or health store. I got my tablets from the health store for € 7.95. There are 900 tablets in my pot. They are small pills, depending on the brand it is recommended to take a few per day. The tablets are not very tasty, they are slightly bitter. You do not immediately notice the effect of the tablets, after a few weeks the effect becomes visible.
