Home Remedies for Cough

Cough is one of the most common and repeated health problems. When a person coughs, the unwanted germs and mucus is released out. Hence, coughing is not really a malignant symptom. Of course, it depends on the cause too. Usually or rather most often, it is caused due to common cold, asthma, inflammation of the pharynx or larynx, dust allergy, smoking, etc. Though, coughing releases the unwanted cold virus, mucus, etc it must be controlled by giving proper treatments. Since, it is a very common condition; one must know how to deal with it, using some home remedies. Or else, they must consult a doctor to control the cough. Not many will prefer to consult a doctor for coughs caused due to common cold, asthma, dust allergy, etc. 

There are many numbers of home remedies for cough. But, not all of these are suitable for everyone. Some are home remedies for curing cough as a medicine, while some of these are taken regularly as a part of our diet, to prevent cough. Some may be suitable for productive coughs, which produce mucus; while some remedies are useful for non-productive coughs or dry coughs.

A simple remedy is taking a spoon of mixture of honey with grape juice. For immediate effects, one can gargle using the juice of spinach. Lemon juice, honey and boiled water added to the juice extracted from onion, must be taken 2 or 3 times a day for quick results. Two to three cloves fried in oil, when chewed, controls cough efficiently. Inhaling the vapors of eucalyptus leaves and mint leaves, when boiled together in water, controls cough quickly. You can cover your head with a towel to prevent the vapors from escaping, just like you do for a “home facial steaming”. Also, it melts the mucus and clears the lungs. 

For dry cough, a combination of almond paste and honey will be of greater use. For making almond paste, seven to eight almonds must be soaked in water for around six to eight hours. Then peel off the skin and grind to paste. This must be taken 2 or 3 times a day, for minimum 2 days. The mixture of three or four spoons of coconut milk along with half spoon of cuscus grass can be considered as another effective remedy for dry cough. 

However, it is always better to prevent cough. One of the most natural ways of preventing cough is regular intake of garlic in our food stuffs. Regular intake of grapes also prevents cough. Black pepper is one of the most important spices, which effectively cures and even prevents cough. Two to three seeds of black pepper can be regularly added in your diet.

Nonetheless, in spite of trying these home remedies, if you have cough for more than 3 or 4 days, with the same vigor or even more, do consult a doctor. This would prevent it from being complicated to some other form. Thus, timely treatments (home remedies or clinical treatments) are recommended for coughs.
